Toro Turf Maintenance Vehicle Goes Hydrogen

April 5, 2007 | By Hydro Kevin Kantola | Filed in: Hydrogen Vehicles.

Toro, the maker of tough turf and lawn care vehicles has teamed with Nuvera Fuel Cells to turn a test vehicle into one that runs on hydrogen. Nuvera will supply the PowerFlow PFV-5 fuel cell system that will go into a Toro Workman utility vehicle.

This green project is part of a contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to produce high tech lawn maintenance equipment. The vehicle will be demonstrated at Niagara Falls State Park.

If this project is successful, a few years down the line we may start seeing thousands of men in their Bermuda shorts and falling down socks riding around, cutting their lawns with lawnmowers powered by hydrogen fuel cells. And, it’s not such a leap to think that the small push mowers will one day be powered by hydrogen as well.
