I last talked about the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Hybrid Roadster back in March 2009, but it’s time for an update. Sometimes, hydrogen fuel cell prototypes never see the light of day after they are created. This old school FCV is different.
The Mercedes Fuel Cell Roadster was recently exhibited at the Pebble Beach, California Concours d’Elegance. Around 150 German students from Sindelfingen created the vehicle to pay homage to an 1886 motorized tricycle created by Carl Benz.
Two years ago when this two seat buggy was created it was the 125th anniversary of Daimler as a car company. The students thought it would be fun the revisit the past and go retro while looking into the future at the same time.
The fuel cell buggy in 1886 was a tricycle with a steering wheel and powered by a gasoline engine. The updated Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Hybrid Roadster uses a joystick for steering, obviously has four wheels and is propelled by hydrogen fuel cell with electric hybrid capabilities.
This extreme makeover just goes to show how far we’ve come in the past 100-plus years. It makes one wonder what the next 100 years will bring in automotive technology.
