Ford 999 Sets Land Speed Record Again

August 16, 2007 | By Hydro Kevin Kantola | Filed in: Hydrogen Cars.

A couple of days ago I had reported that the Ford 999 production hydrogen racecar had set the land-speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah at 161 mph. On Wednesday, the Ford Fusion 999, broke its own record and charged past the 200 mark and has set the record at 207.297 mph.

The new record means the Ford 999 hydrogen racecar gets to join the 200 MPH Club of Bonneville Speed Week. Apparently this time driver Rick Byrnes didn’t have a brain fade and pull the parachute too early as he did on the last run. So, one can imagine that he would be quite ecstatic in making up for Monday’s mistake.

In other related news, the Ohio State University Buckeye Bullet 2 hydrogen racecar (non-production) has reported hitting 149 mph at Bonneville on their first run. Now, let’s see if they can follow Ford’s lead and up the ante a bit on their subsequent run.
