Car Alerts
Notice: We have moved this page to the Hydrogen
Car and Vehicles blog, which is updately on average
5 days per week.
Hydrogen car alerts will help you keep informed
on a weekly basis on the happenings within the hydrogen car industry.
On this page, all sorts of relevant information is offered pertaining
to H2 cars and the hydrogen industry as a whole.
Here are some of the latest stories and articles about hydrogen
cars:
2006
- DaimlerChrysler has logged more than 1.2 million miles of zero-emissions
fuel cell experience -- no other automobile manufacturer even
comes close. This combined mileage is a result of more than 100
fuel cell vehicles operating worldwide, including Mercedes-Benz
F-Cell passenger cars, Dodge Sprinter medium-duty fuel cell-powered
vans and Citaro fuel cell-powered transportation buses.
- Mazda and BMW promise hydrogen cars by 2008. Mazda has delivered
the first two hydrogen-powered RX-8s to corporate customers in
Japan, while BMW has confirmed plans to bring a hydrogen-powered
7 Series to market within two years. Initially, BMW intends to
build a few hundred examples which will be able to switch between
burning standard gasoline and hydrogen so that drivers will not
be left stranded while hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is developed.
- Honda has a rough idea of who its first fuel-cell customers
will be people trading in their gasoline-electric hybrid
cars. "We already hear of people saying, gee I like
my hybrid but what's next. I want to go beyond gasoline,"
says Ellis. Honda believes the fuel cells actually will be an
easier step for drivers of the compressed natural gas cars it
sells in the United States. "They already have experience
with limited infrastructure, with high-pressure gaseous storage
on board. They're comfortable with it. They've crossed that hurdle.
Hybrid drivers haven't done that yet," says Ellis.
- Nuvera Fuel Cells announced today that Fiat presented the Panda
Hydrogen, a fuel cell powered car, at Hy Park, scene of the first
ever Hydrogen Olympics. Hy Park, promoted by Regione Piemonte,
is not just a show-case of hydrogen technologies, but the demonstration
of Regione system approach where local industries, research centers,
academia, together with the Fiat Group, play a leading role in
developing hydrogen applications.
- LAX has taken delivery of five hydrogen fuel-cell-powered Mercedes
Benzes from DaimlerChrysler. The Los Angeles World Airports have
been sharpening the cutting edge on government use of alternative
fuel. Fully half of LAX's vehicles use alternative fuel or power
sources including the five Benzes, which burn hydrogen gas and
emit only water from their tailpipes.
- Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman announced Tuesday that the Department
of Energy will provide $119 million in funding for hydrogen fuel
cell research. Speaking at the Washington Auto Show, Bodman also
unveiled the DOE's "Roadmap on Manufacturing R&D for
the Hydrogen Economy," a white paper that lays out the R&D
needed in manufacturing, storage and production of fuel cell technologies.
The announcement is part of President Bush's $1.2 billion Hydrogen
Fuel Initiative announced back in 2003, with a goal of making
hydrogen fuel cell vehicles practical and cost-effective for large
numbers of Americans by 2020.
- The ministry of non-conventional energy sources (MNES) is hopeful
of having hydrogen-driven vehicles on Indian roads by 2007 with
International Tractors Ltd (ITL) having agreed to undertake commercial
production. "While hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is a long-term
plan, we hope to have vehicles with hydrogen combustion engine
in present vehicles running within the next five years,"
minister of Non-Conventional Energy Sources Vilas Muttemwar said
here Wednesday.
2005
- India's
first hydrogen fuelling station was officially opened
on Sunday 9th October by Mr Mani Shanker Aiyar, Honourable Minister
of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Panchayati Raj. This is the first
phase of India's development of its Hydrogen Economy. The facility,
a Hydrogen/Compressed Natural Gas (HCNG) blend and pure hydrogen
dispensing station, is located at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited's
R&D centre, in Faridabad, just north of New Delhi. The event
was hosted by Mr Sarthak Behuria, Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation
Ltd.
- Researcher Dr. Clemens Heske is one of the newest associate
professors in the UNLV
Chemistry Department. Heske's world-renowned materials
expertise in physics could play an important role in the advancement
of the search for a more efficient, economical and environmentally
friendly alternative energy.
- Rutgers University has launched its New
Jersey Hydrogen Learning Center with hopes of becoming
the state's top resource for renewable hydrogen research and development.
According to Jeanne Fox, president of the state Board of Public
Utilities, "Hydrogen is really something for the future that
we need to get to now."
- Atlantic
Hydrogen Inc., a Canada-based start-up, has developed
a device it is calling CarbonSaver, which produces hydrogen from
natural gas and remove the carbon without creating greenhouse
gases. The carbon is broken down into a fine powder, which can
then be recycled into other products such as tires, ink and other
dyes.
- Scotland, the windiest country in Europe, is looking towards
using wind-farms to produce hydrogen for fuel cell cars. Alan
Mortimer of ScottishPower
says, "With the abundance of renewable energy here, Scotland
is well placed to lead the world in hydrogen fuels." Another
ScottishPower spokesman has said, "Only so much electricity
from windfarms can go into the National Grid. We are looking at
what to do with our excess." Those Star Trek fans can add
their own Scotty quote here.
